Recent rain has brought in copious water to many water bodies at Thalavadi hills in Erode district.

Recent rain in Talavadi hills has brought cheers to citizens as they have began carrying out agriculture activities. Also, many of the water bodies in the hill areas received copious rainfall thereby improving the storage level and helping in the groundwater recharge in the areas.

There are about 33,000 people in the hilltop who depend on agriculture for their food and also market their produce and earn their livelihood. Ragi, cabbage, sesame, corn and millets were the main crop in the hilltop. The hilltop has been receiving good rainfall in the past one month as cultivation activity has begun recently. Last weeks rainfall led to the water bodies receiving copious water there by increasing the storage levels. While most of the percolation ponds and check dams in the interior forest reached its full storage level, wild animals are able to get water without shortage. Hence, animals entering human habitations in search of food and water were not seen in the hilltop.

Increase in water level in most of the ponds in the hilltop located near agricultural land and near villages have helped to the water level in wells to increase. People of Mavanatham village said that the water body near the village had gone dry in the past six months and storage level improved due to rains in the past one month.

We were able to carryout agricultural activities due to the availability of water, they added.
