Two dead after wall collapses in Visakhapatnam

Two workers died on the spot and one was critical injured when the boundary wall of a building caved in, at an under-construction building in Dabagardens area here in Visakhapatnam on Monday.

The incident took place around 8.45 pm.

As per DCP (Zone-I) Ranga Reddy, the workers were reportedly using a mechanised drill machine close to the boundary wall of the neighbouring high-rise building when the wall caved in and buried two workers and the third escaped.

The deceased have been identified as Siva of Tamil Nadu and Shankar of Badangi Village of Vizianagaram district. The third worker Selvam from Tamil Nadu managed to escape with injuries. He has been admitted to King George Hospital and is undergoing treatment.

The under construction building belongs to a church congregation and the people responsible have been taken into custody, said the DCP.

He have also booked cases under IPC Section 304 (part two) and further investigation is on, said Mr. Ranga Reddy.

According to the DCP, Monday was a public holiday on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi and it was surprising to see that work was on even in the night time. Moreover, we find that the basic safety norms were not being followed, said Mr. Ranga Reddy.
