Saplings planted


The ‘One student one tree’ campaign was launched at the Periyar University here on Friday.

The District Collecor, Rohini P. Bhajibhakare, inaugurated the campaign by planting a few saplings.

The initiative followed a call made by Ch. Vidyasagar Rao, Governor and Chancellor of the university, to the students to join hands for increasing forest cover on the campuses of the education institutions.

The Collector stressed the need for increasing the forest cover for maintaining the ecology. She urged the students to go for meaningful birthday celebrations by planting a sapling every year and taking care to protect them.

M. Manivannan, Registrar, said that the University has planned to plant about 50,000 saplings on its campus, in the premises of all the affiliated colleges in the four districts of Salem, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri and Namakkal. The campaign will also be taken to the houses of the students to ensure its success.

As many as 2,000 students, faculty, participated in the event and planted saplings.

The NSS volunteers of the University undertook a pledge of playing a key role for the success of this campaign on the occasion.
