National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) chairman and managing director H. Purushotham on Thursday said India was rich in research publications but fared poorly in patenting.

While India ranked fifth in research publications, it ranked 52nd on the Global Patent Index, he said.

Mr. Purushotham was speaking after inaugurating a two-day workshop on patent search jointly organised by the NRDC-Technology and Innovation Support Center (TISC) in collaboration with the Andhra Pradesh Innovation Society, the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) and the Cell for IPR Promotion and Management (CIPAM) under the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

Stating there was need for awareness on patent search and filing methods among researchers and startups, he said NRDC, WIPO, CIPAM and APIS would help facilitate it.

NRDC-TISC has entered into memorandum of agreements (MOUs) for commercialising IPs and technologies with Damodaram Sanjivayya National Law University, Visakhapatnam; Adikavi Nannaya University , Rajamahendravaram; and Sagi Ramakrishnam Raju Engineering College, Bhimavaram.

Under the agreements, the NRDC would strengthen and broaden the technology resource base by fostering long-term relationships with R&D organisations, MSMEs, PSUs and individual inventors. The agreements were signed between Dr. Purushotham and the Vice-Chancellors of the two universities and Dr. K.V.S.N. Raju of the engineering college.

Global Infrastructure Sector of WIPO, Innovation and Technology Support Section head Andrew Czajkowski; Geneva-based WIPO IPR Manager Alex Riechel; AP Innovation Society CEO V. Valli Kumari; NRDC TISC manager and incharge B. K. Sahu; DSNLU VC V. Kesava Rao; and ANU VC Mutyala Naidu were present.
