Administering a pledge, and sports events marked the National Girl Child Day celebrations held at the Mahatma Gandhi stadium here on Wednesday.

R. Rohini R. Bhajibhakare, District Collector, was the chief guest.

She said that the National Gild Child Day was celebrated to provide various opportunities to girls, protect their rights, and recognise the hidden talents in them.

Ms. Bhajibhakare said that the State government was implementing various programmes to uplift women. Child marriages and child workers were hampering the progress of women.

Society should raise its voice to put an end to these practices.

Ms. Bhajibhakare asked parents to report the wrong doings against their girl children openly so that the accused were brought to book.

Higher education will enable girls to overcome all the challenges, she said.

The girls participated in various sports events held in connection with the day. The Collector gave away prizes to the winners.

A. Gnanagowry, Chief Educational Officer, Selvam, Child Welfare Officer, and others were present.
