Tamil Nadu Government Doctors Association (TNGDA) has reiterated its earlier demand to restore 50% quota for Tamil Nadu Government doctors for post graduate medical seats (PG-NEET). TNGDA representatives said that the association will decide to go for a protest at the State executive committee meeting to be held soon if the demand is not accepted by the Central Government.
A top officer bearer of TNGDA said that primary health centres and government hospitals started to function with adequate number of doctors only after the State Government introduced quota for service which attracted many young doctors to service. Withdrawing the quota will result in doctors refraining to join the government service.
“Specialist services and child and mother care will be affected in Government hospitals if the quota is withdrawn. If the quota is ensured, service doctors who join PG course will come back and continue service in government hospital as specialists,” said N. Ravishankar, State secretary of TNGDA.
Dr. Ravishankar said that doctors in government service have done their best to improve all the health indices like maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate.
“In view of all these factors, TNGDA requests the State Government to give enough pressure to the Union Government with the already passed resolution in assembly in support of 50% reservation for service quota. A doctor has to complete minimum service of two years to become eligible for service quota. TNGDA will go for a protest without affecting service to patients if the demand is not met,” he said.
