To avoid traffic congestion inside the Dr. MGR Central Bus Stand (New Bus Stand), the police have asked all bus drivers to park vehicles only in bus bays.

Over 1,100 buses are operated from the bus stand everyday.

The number doubles during festival season. Only 80 buses can be parked in the bays at any point of time. Other buses are haphazardly parked on the premises causing frequent traffic congestion.

City Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar held a meeting with officials of the Transport Department, corporation, and private bus operators here.

It was decided that buses should be parked only in the bays and not in any other places.

Buses should arrive at the bus stand only 15 minutes before their departure time.

Buses from Villupuram and Coimbatore division and other special buses should be parked in the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation depot outside the bus stand and should enter the premises only 15 minutes before the scheduled departure.

Officials proposed creation of a new exit point near the corporation cycle stand and opening the right side bay for Bengaluru buses near the hotel. It was also proposed to widen the entry/exit point at the rear side of the bus stand.

Officials said that much of the space on the premises is consumed for two-wheeler parking.

Though establishing a multi-level parking lot was discussed, officials were of the view that new bus stands should be established at Ammapet, Kondalampatti, and Mamangam as a permanent solution to ease traffic congestion in the city.
