The Maharashtra Congress on Thursday held a meeting of its MLAs at the party headquarters in Mumbai. However, the election of the legislative party leader has been postponed.
At the meeting, State Congress chief Balasaheb Thorat asked the legislators to take up issues raised by people at all levels. He said, “The people have reposed faith in our party. Now, it is our responsibility to prove them right. Let’s fight on the people’s issues in the House and also on the street.” Mr. Thorat said the party will ensure that the farmers will get relief from the losses caused by unseasonal rain. A joint delegation of Congress and NCP leaders had planned to meet the Governor on Thursday to discuss farmers’ issues, but the meeting was rescheduled.
Mr. Thorat said legislative party leader would be elected within five days in presence of Central observers. “Today’s meeting was not planned to elect the legislative party leader. It was to felicitate the MLAs.”
Among the top contenders for the post are Mr. Thorat and former chief ministers Ashok Chavan and Prithviraj Chavan. The latter said the party high-command would take the final decision. The BJP, the Shiv Sena and the NCP have all elected their legislative party leaders: Devendra Fadnavis, Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar respectively.
