The Salem City Police has launched a Whatsapp helpline number to prefer complaints related to cyber crimes.
Sanjay Kumar, City Police Commissioner, introduced the Whatsapp helpline No. 90872 00100 at the inaugural of the awareness programme on cyber crimes organised by the Cyber Crime wing at the AVS Engineering College here on Thursday.
Mr. Sanajy Kumar said that cyber crimes based on computers and mobile phones are on the increase. The police has been receiving complaints on facebook and Whatsapp crimes, online banking fraud, smart phone offences, crimes based on internet and computers, and pornography.
The Salem-based Cyber Wing is dealing with the cyber crime complaints from the people of the districts of Salem, Namakkal, Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri. The Whatsapp helpline number has been introduced to enable the people to prefer complaints instantly without any difficulty.
The new facility will also help the police initiate action on the cyber crime complaints and on the other crimes taking place in public places without any delay and bring the culprits to book. It will help prevent the crimes.
The Commissioner of Police called upon the students to create awareness about the cyber crimes, preventing them, the Whatsapp helpline number introduced for checking the cyber crimes among the rural masses.
He urged the general public and the students to be utmost cautious while using the computers and mobile phones.
