There are 1,562 such courts operating across the country. A Central assistance of Rs.4.8 lakh would be provided to each of them in the current financial year.

The courts were established on the basis of the recommendation of the 11th Finance Commission to expeditiously dispose of pending cases in sessions courts.

Initially, the scheme was for a period of five years from 2000 to 2005. It was extended for another five years in 2005.

As per information received by the Law Ministry from the State governments and registries of High Courts, 28.38 lakh cases have so far been disposed by the courts out of the total of 35.02 lakh cases transferred to them over the past 10 years.
