Panaji: Around 19 beaches of the coastal tourist State with beach stretches of over 10 kilometre face the threat of erosion, Water Resources Minister Vinod Palienkar told the Goa Assembly on Tuesday.

In a written answer tabled during question hour of the ongoing monsoon session of the State assembly on Tuesday, Mr. Palienkar also said that sea erosion and beach protection measures were being taken in popular beaches like Anjuna, Keri-Tiracol, Morjim in North Goa and Agonda, Betalbatim, and Majorda.

Among the beaches most affected by erosion are Betalbatim (1320 mts), Arossim beach (1190 mts), Agonda beach (1000 mts), Keri-Tiracol (1000 mts), the reply said further.

He said that over 10.39 km of the coastline along 19 beaches had been affected and explained that steps were being taken to arrest the erosion and protect the beaches which were a tourist attraction.

The Ministry of Water Resources takes measures like building protection walls, reinforces erosion-affected areas with tetra-pods, geo-fibre barriers, etc., to salvage the eroded beach stretches.
