Seven women among eight killed in Haryana pile-up

Eight people, including seven women, were killed and several injured in a pile-up caused by heavy fog in Haryana’s Jhajjar on Monday.

Two of the injured are said to be in a critical condition and were referred to the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak. The rest are under treatment at Jhjjar’s civil hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Monday hit out at the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD government in Odisha, saying the “demon of corruption” in various sectors has become strong in the state.

Modi, who launched a slew of projects for the state and released a stamp and a coin to commemorate Odisha’s 1817 Paika rebellion, was addressing a BJP rally in Khurda town.

The Prime Minister in an apparent jibe at the BJD government, asked,”Who is feeding the demon (of corruption)?”

Coldest December night in Srinagar in 11 years

At minus 6.8 degrees Celsius Srinagar recorded the coldest December night on Monday after over a decade, as a severe cold wave swept through the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region, Met said.

“After 11 years, Srinagar recorded the coldest night. Last time such severe December cold hit the city was on December 31, 2007, when the mercury dipped to minus 7.2,” said the Met official.

The present cold wave in Jammu and Kashmir was likely to continue for another five days till Saturday, as no change was expected, he added.

The valley was presently passing through the 40-day harsh winter of Chillai Kalan which started on December 21 and will end on January 30.

Pahalgam and Gulmarg recorded minus 7.2 and minus 6.8 while the minimum was minus 14.7 in Leh and minus 15.2 degrees Celsius in Kargil.

Jammu city recorded 5.3, Katra 4.8, Batote minus 1.4, Bannihal minus 3 and Bhaderwah minus 2.1 degrees Celsius.

Delhiites woke up to a chilly Monday morning, with the minimum temperature settling at 4.6 degrees Celsius. The fall in temperature is due to cold wave conditions prevailing over northwest India, the Meteorological Department said.

The minimum temperature in Delhi was recorded at 4.6 degrees, three notches below the season’s average, it said. The humidity level at 8.30 AM on Monday was recorded at 100 per cent.

The weather office has forecast clear skies for the day ahead. “The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 22 degrees Celsius,” it said.

On Sunday, the maximum and minimum temperatures were recorded at 22 and 3.7 degrees Celsius respectively.

The Australian cricket team held a practice session on Christmas eve, ahead of the third test match against India in the ongoing test series.

Skipper Tim Paine said on Monday that he was relishing his sometimes heated battle with animated Indian counterpart Virat Kohli, and promised “intense, hard” cricket in the crunch Boxing Day Test at Melbourne.

The death toll from a tsunami that hit the Indonesian islands of Java and Sumatra after the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted rose to at least 280 on Monday, officials said, as rescuers using heavy machinery and their bare hands searched for more victims.

Hundreds more were injured when the tsunami struck, almost without warning, along the rim of the Sunda Strait late on Saturday. More than 3,000 coastal residents were forced to evacuate to higher ground, with a high-tide warning in place until Tuesday.
