The revelations made by former Environment Minister and senior Congress leader Jayanthi Natarajan in her letter to Sonia Gandhi regarding specific requests on green clearances was “a serious issue”, said Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar on Friday.

“The revelations made in Ms. Natarajan’s letter to Ms. Gandhi which have become public today is a matter of great concern,” said Mr. Javadekar, speaking on the sidelines of a farmers’ award ceremony in Pune.

As the current Environment Minister, he said it was his duty to review those specific files where extraneous influence had been alleged as per the letter.

“I will definitely review those files and see the facts for myself,” Mr. Javadekar said.

In her letter to Ms. Gandhi, Ms. Natarajan had alleged that she had received specific requests from Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on environmental clearances and she had subsequently denied clearances to big projects on grounds that they were detrimental to the environment.
