Why didn’t Modi raise visa issue, asks Congress

Says no credible assurance from U.S.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi must explain why he did not raise the issue of H-1B visas with U.S. President Donald Trump during their recent meeting, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said here on Friday.

The Congress leader said that before the Prime Minister left for his state visit to the U.S., he had been urged to take up the case of IT professionals who, he stressed, could not be treated on a par with immigrants as they are skilled professionals.

“He has returned without bringing any credible assurance from the U.S. President,” Mr. Sharma said, adding, “Why is he silent? He owes an explanation to the people...”

Security concerns

Referring to the “signals from neighbours Pakistan and China”, he expressed concern over the current security situation and said the government should take the “senior leadership of the Opposition into confidence about the security scenario and how the government plans to address this situation.”

Responding to a question, he said there was no possibility of the Congress reconsidering its decision to boycott the special midnight meeting to launch the GST.

“This is not a minor issue that the government will request a few hours before the event and a major Opposition party will amend its decision. Keeping in mind Parliament’s decorum and the country’s tradition, we have decided not to participate in the celebration.”
