Governor Satya Pal Malik hoisted the national tricolour at the Sher-e-Kashmir stadium in Srinagar, in the first Independence Day celebration in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of its special status.

After unfurling the flag, Mr. Malik inspected the parade of paramilitary forces and Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Malik said people need not be worried about their identity after the steps taken by the Centre.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday asserted that there would be no compromise on “crime, corruption and communalism” under his rule, which has been characterized by “ nyay ke saath vikas ” (development with justice) and “ sampradayik sauhardra ” (communal harmony).

In his hour-long address at Gandhi Maidan here on the occasion of Independence Day, Mr. Kumar said a new system of policing was being introduced in the state for effective maintenance of law and order. - PTI

Addressing a gathering at the State’s main Independence Day function in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath stressed on the need to generate employment for the youth by attracting investments. “We are going to enact a law to reserve 70 per cent jobs for people of Madhya Pradesh in the state’s industrial units,” Mr. Nath said. - PTI

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day address from the ramparts of the Red Fort was not only a summing up of what his newly re-elected government had accomplished in the last 75 days but also unveiled a powerful social charter going forward, including raising concerns over population explosion, water conservation along with the big announcement of appointing a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) , a decision that had been pending for two decades since the Kargil War.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Thursday that rides on DTC and cluster buses will be free for women from October 29 on the occasion of Bhaiya Dooj.

He made the announcement at the Delhi government’s Independence Day event at Chhatrasal Stadium.

“On the day of Raksha Bandhan, I want to give gift to our sisters that there will be free rides for women on all DTC (Delhi Transport Corporation) and cluster buses from October 29, which will ensure their safety,” Mr. Kejriwal said.

Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao has said that the Telangana government will unveil a 60-day action plan to establish a new work culture in villages and towns in the light of three new legislation in the State.

Speaking after unfurling the national flag to mark the Independence Day celebrations at the historic Golconda Fort, Mr. Rao expressed confidence that the legislation for municipal, panchayat raj and revenue would ensure cleanliness and greenery in villages and towns. After all, poor sanitation was the main reason for spread of diseases.

As a first step in the plan, he said a sanitation drive should be taken up in villages and towns with the slogan “cleanliness is godliness”.

Even before the couple landed at Chennai airport on Wednesday, news was out that Tirunelveli District Collector Shilpa Prabhakar Satish had recommended the names of the couple to the government for an award on bravery.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday urged the people of the State to mark the 73rd Independence Day by rededicating themselves to distress relief in the flood-hit regions and the reconstruction that must follow.

The State could not afford to weaken in the face of disaster. It had to move forward by overcoming all hurdles, he said, delivering the Independence Day message at the Central Stadium .
