Despite widespread protests, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the city passed off peacefully without any major incidents.

The DMK, the Congress, the Left parties and a few minor outfits, along with film personalities, staged protests at various places demanding the constitution of the Cauvery Management Board.

Outside the airport, the protesters released black balloons as Mr. Modi took a helicopter to participate in Defence Expo. A few of them climbed a huge hoarding in front of the airport and waved black flags. Traffic on GST Road leading to the airport was affected.

In the afternoon, Sardar Patel Road was closed for a few hours as Mr. Modi visited the Adyar Cancer Institute. The Prime Minister avoided taking any public road during his five-hour trip, by the end of which over 3,000 protesters were detained.

Meanwhile, #GoBackModi became a top trending hashtag on Twitter.
