The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday accused the UPA government of “diverting” the Telangana issue, and demanded that the “promise” made to the people be fulfilled. Ahead of the winter session of Parliament beginning on Thursday, the BJP said it would push for “Telangana that was promised.”
“The Congress has diverted the issue by including two districts; they are absolutely not serious about the issue,” said BJP spokesman Prakash Javadekar.
Senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance wanted the government to bring the Telangana Bill in its “original form.”
“This [adding two more districts] is a deliberate design to delay the Telangana issue, and we feel the Congress is pandering to the rank communal forces in the State,” he said.
Following a meeting here, the NDA constituents concurred to corner the government on several issues, including internal security, price rise, crime against women, plight of sugarcane growers and the aggressive posturing by Pakistan and China and the ‘subversion of constitutional bodies’ such as the JPC on the 2G scam.
Issues to be discussed Mr. Prasad said, “There are lots of serious issues like the Indian Mujahedeen targeting political rallies, as we saw in Patna recently; growing instances of crime against women despite laws being passed; and the shameful saga of subversion of the JPC that will be raised. The issue of China’s aggressive designs, particularly in the context of President Pranab Mukherjee’s recent visit to Arunachal Pradesh, also needs discussion.”The NDA was willing to cooperate with the government to allow Parliament to function. “Since this will effectively be the last session for carrying out legislative work, we want the House to run and are willing to cooperate. It is now the government’s duty to ensure that work is carried out; because, of late, it is the Congress that creates problems which lead to disruption,” he said.
The NDA was keen that the Lokpal Bill, which was passed by the Lok Sabha, should be brought for discussion and passage in the Rajya Sabha, he said.
