UK seeks information on Christian Michel

The United Kingdom has asked India for information about the condition of Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in the AgustaWestland helicopter deal, after he arrived here from the United Arab Emirates.

“Our staff continue to support the family of a British man following his detention in the UAE. We are in contact with his family and the Emirati authorities regarding his case, and are urgently seeking information from the Indian authorities on his circumstances,” said a spokesperson of the U.K. High Commission.

Christian Michel was brought from the United Arab Emirates on a special flight at midnight Tuesday and was questioned at the CBI headquarters. A Delhi court remanded him in the custody of the CBI.

The UAE and the UK are locked in consular disputes over the rights of citizens in recent weeks. Last month, a crisis flared after the UAE handed a prison term to a British academic on the charge of espionage. But the UAE freed him after the intervention of British Prime Minister Theresa May.
