Two Myanmarese sentenced for carrying opium

The Judge of the Special Court of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS), P. Surendra, has sentenced two Myanmarese, who were arrested along with 580 gm of opium.

The two, identified as Tingsoumiy (40) and Wouchaing (35) of Tamu in Myanmar, were arrested on September 13, 2008 by the troopers of 31 Assam Rifles along with the drug while trying to sneak into Manipur. This crime is punishable under Sections 18(C) and 29 of the NDPS Act, 1985.

The accused were sentenced to 2 years and 10 months of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs.10,000 each. In case of non-payment, they will have to be in jail for one more month. Since the detention period has to be set off, they will be in prison for a few months only.
