Two more bodies were recovered from the Central Ammunition Depot (CAD) of the Army at Pulgoan town in Wardha district of Maharashtra on Wednesday morning, taking the death toll to 18.
“Two more dead bodies have been recovered from inside the depot. The total number of casualties now is 18,” Wardha District Collector Shailesh Nawal told The Hindu .
The Collector said 17 injured, who were admitted to a hospital in Wardha, were stable.The identities of the deceased are yet to be established.
An “accidental fire” at the shed was followed by explosions on Tuesday morning, resulting in the deaths. The CAD is the most crucial ammunition depot of the Army and among the largest in the world.
According to some sources, one fire fighter is still missing.
The Collector did not rule out the recovery of more bodies.
“The reasons behind the incident will be known only after the completion of an inquiry by the Army,” Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said on Tuesday.
