A 12-year-old, who was raped along with another minor by two youths in Pune’s Kasarsai area on Sunday afternoon, died on Wednesday night, sources at the Sassoon General Hospital said.

The crime that occurred 10 km from Hinjewadi came to light after the deceased was taken to the hospital after falling ill. She went into a coma and passed away around 11 p.m., the sources said.

The body would be sent for post mortem, police said.

The Hinjewadi police have arrested a 22-year-old and a 17-year-old for the double rape.

Both the victims and the accused are children of labourers, said police.

“On Sunday afternoon between 3:30 and 4:00 p.m., the girls, who were playing on the premises of the Sant Tukaram Maharaj temple, were lured by the accused by giving them chocolates. The minors were then taken to a secluded area behind the temple where they were molested in turns by the two youths,” said senior inspector Shivaji Gaware, in charge of the Hinjewadi police station.

Victims threatened

The victims were threatened by the youths with dire consequences if they reported the incident to their parents.

“It was only after one of the girls started suffering from pain and weakness that the parents became aware of the incident. We have questioned the other traumatised victim as well. She is undergoing counseling presently,” said Mr. Gaware.

The accused have been booked under sections 376 D (rape of a woman by one or more persons) 366 A (procuration of minor girl) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Children from the Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 2012.
