Two members of the banned CPI (Maoist) were killed during an exchange of fire with Greyhounds near Devulapadu in Koyyuru mandal of Visakhapatnam Agency area on Sunday, Superintendent of Police Koya Praveen said.
The Maoists belonging to the Galikonda area committee were involved in the incident. Bodies of two Maoists were found at the site of exchange of fire and they are yet to be identified, Mr. Praveen said.
The exchange of fire resulting in the death of two Maoists came just three days after Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh held consultations with top officials of AP police, CRPF and BSF, here and at Koraput on measures to be taken to curb Maoists.
This was also the second exchange of fire in two months. On December 11 last an exchange of fire took place between a group of Maoists from Odisha and the police in Iragayi forest area in Araku Valley mandal while the former was returning after participating in party's PLGA week programme in Visakha Agency. But no casualty was reported.
Last year had witnessed a few exchanges of fire between the Maoists and the police forces and in the June encounter in Munchingput mandal a Maoist was killed.
