Two killed, 3 injured in violence in lower Assam

Procession against extortion, kidnapping and killing by NDFB’s Songbjit faction in Bodoland Territorial Area District area turns violent

One person was killed and another was injured on Tuesday when the police and the Central Reserve Police Force personnel resorted to firing on a procession taken out at Kurshakathi in lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district under the aegis of the Aboro Surkhasa Samiti against extortion, kidnapping and killing by Songbjit faction of National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) in Bodoland Territorial Area District area.

Some of the people in the procession tried to attack four Bodo youths passing the area which the personnel resisted.

The procession then turned violent and attacked the personnel.

The deceased has been identified as Hayat Ali (35) while the injured has been identified as Ranjit Das (25). The condition of Mr. Das is stated to be critical.

In another incident, one person was injured when suspected NDFB (Songbijit) militants fired on a group of people inside Panijani Reserve Forest near Tulshibil in Gossaigaon sub-division of Kokrajhar district when they had gone for woodcutting.

Youth lynched

In the third incident in lower Assam’s Goalpara district, a Bodo youth was lynched and another was severely beaten by public when the duo had allegedly gone to collect money from a businessman who had been served an extortion note in the name of the NDFB. S.N. Singh, Inspector-General of Police (Law and Order), said it was yet to be ascertained whether the duo was NDFB militants.
