Trinamool’s doors open for BJP: Cong.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Saturday questioned the Trinamool Congress’s decision to admit former BJP leader Chandan Mitra to the party.

Mr. Ramesh, who was on visit here, said Mr. Mitra had distributed sweets when the Babri Masjid was pulled down in 1992. The Congress leader, however, refused to comment on the defection of Congress MLAs to the Trinamool.

State Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury admitted that the defections were a setback, and questioned the Chief Minister’s commitment to democracy.

“If she is really committed to democracy as she claims to be, then why does she not ask such Congress MLAs to resign and get re-elected on Trinamool ticket,” Mr. Chowdhury asked.

“Ms. Banerjee said in her speech that not everyone is bad in the BJP and only some indulge in dirty politics. She has indicated that her doors are open for the BJP,” he said.

CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said the Trinamool was responsible for the growth of the BJP in the State. “The Federal Front is a ploy to give oxygen to the BJP by dividing the anti-BJP votes,” he said.

BJP national secretary Rahul Sinha said the Chief Minister’s “fear of the BJP” was evident in her speech.

As for the Chief Minister’s plan to invite Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and CPI(M) leaders for a rally, both parties dismissed it.
