Punjab amends Excise Act to allow clubs, hotels near highways to serve liquor

The Punjab government on Friday gave the nod for a proposal to amend the Punjab Excise Act to enable hotels, restaurants and clubs to serve alcohol within 500 meters of highways. The amendment Bill, 2017, with regard to the Punjab Excise Act, 1914, was tabled in the ongoing Budget session of the State Assembly for enactment. The Cabinet, on June 19, gave the nod for the draft amendment Bill, 2017.

Ram Nath Kovind files nomination

The NDA's presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind filed his nomination papers in New Delhi on June 23, 2017 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP president Amit Shah and party veterans L.K. Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi. Chief Ministers of BJP-ruled states — with the exception of Manohar Parrikar of Goa — were also present.

30 more added to Smart Cities Mission

Thirty cities were added to the Centre's Smart Cities Mission and a total investment of Rs. 57,393 crore was announced by Union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu on Friday, taking the total number of smart cities to 90. The announcement marks the second anniversary of the launch of the Smart Cities Mission.

Govt. stats on Aadhaar coverage "puffery", includes dead, petitioners tell SC

The government statistics as told to the Supreme Court that 95.1% of the entire population is covered by Aadhaar, which has already seen 115.5 crore enrollments, is sheer "puffery" and includes the dead too. Police officer Mohammed Ayub Pandith lynched outside Srinagar's Jamia Masjid

The police have identified the person killed outside the Jamia Masjid in Srinagar as a deputy superintendent of police. "Another police officer sacrificed his life in line of duty. DySP Mohammed Ayub Pandith was attacked and beaten to death by a mob at Nowhatta on Thursday night," said a police spokesman.

PSLV-C38 lobs 31 satellites into orbit

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on Friday successfully launched 31 satellites – 29 of them belonging to other countries through a PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle). The PSLV-C38 took off from the first launchpad of the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) in Sriharikota at 9.29 a.m.

BJP member arrested near Thrissur for printing fake currency

Rakesh, a BJP youth wing worker, was arrested in connection with fake currency printing on Thursday. Fake currency worth ₹1.37 lakh and printing machines were seized from his house at Anchamparuthy, near Mathilakam, in Kerala. A case was registered against his brother Rajeev, a Dalit Morcha leader, also. Police are serching for him.

Darjeeling impasse: senior GJM leaders resign from GTA

Senior leaders of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), including party president Bimal Gurung and general secretary Roshan Giri, on Friday resigned from the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) , a regional autonomous body. Their resignation letters were sent to the West Bengal Home Secretary.

NEET results declared

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) on Friday released the results of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) for admission to MBBS and BDS courses. Efforts on to rescue toddler from borewell in town near Hyderabad

Despite the police, the civic body and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) making efforts for the past 18 hours to rescue her, 14-month-old Chinnari remains stuck in an abandoned borewell at Chevella town, 60 km away from Hyderabad. The girl is alive and waving her hand now and then from the 37-foot borewell, according to rescue personnel.
