In a major gunfight raged between militants and Army in north Kashmir’s Tangdar border town on Sunday, three militants have been killed so far.
“The gunfight is still going on, but it has been limited to intermittent firing to both sides. So far three militants have been killed. There are no casualties on our side,” Army spokesperson, Lt Col Brijesh Pandey told The Hindu . “We believe that there are couple more of them [militants] in there.”
While the Army says that it has foiled a major infiltration attempt by the militants with the ongoing encounter, it is significant as this is the first militant attack since almost two decades in the border town. According to police, the two houses where the militants are holed up is only 200 yards from the Army’s Brigade Headquarters.
The Army said that the encounter started at around 4.15 a.m. on Sunday with militants opening fire.
“We have cordoned off the area and hopeful the encounter will be over soon,” the officer said.
