The atmosphere in Ujjain's Nagda town turned tense after a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader was shot at and injured on Friday.
Bherulal Tank, the district head of the VHP in Ujjain, was shot at by unknown assailants on Friday morning but he survived and was rushed to a private hospital in Indore for treatment.
The district administration imposed section 144 after tension gripped the town.
VHP activists took to the streets accusing the banned outfit Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) of orchestrating the attack.
The VHP has called for a Bandh in the district.
