A youth, suspected to be suffering from mental illness, attacked an eight-year-old girl with a blade inflicting grievous injuries on her neck in Yellendu town on Sunday.
The ghastly incident took place at LBS Nagar in the coal town on Sunday afternoon.
According to police sources, Shiva, a resident of LBS Nagar, allegedly pounced on Kusuma (8), daughter of a local kirana shop owner, near her house. The unsuspecting girl sustained deep wounds on her neck.
The assailant fled the scene on noticing passersby rushing towards the girl on hearing her screams. The girl was first taken to the government hospital in Yellendu from where she was referred to the district headquarters hospital.
Her condition is stated to be stable.
The local police ruled out robbery as possible motive behind the attack.
The Yellendu town police have launched an investigation into the case.
