The Mysuru royal family has a new heir in Yaduveer Gopal Raj Urs to continue the Dasara traditions of the Wadiyar dynasty and carry forward the protracted legal battle with the State government over the issue of acquisition of the Mysuru palace.
His adoption as heir was announced by Pramoda Devi Wadiyar at a press conference at Amba Vilas Palace on Thursday.
Yaduveer Urs’s adoption was necessitated following the death of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar in December 2013 without issue.
Yaduveer Urs is the grandson of Princess Gayatri Devi (the eldest daughter of the last Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar and the elder sister of late Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar) and son of Tripurasundari Devi and Swarup Anand Gopal Raj Urs. He studied in Vidya Niketan School, Bengaluru, up to class 10 and completed class 12 at Canadian International School, Bengaluru, after which he left for the United States. He is currently doing his BA, majoring in Economics and English, at Boston. His family members describe him as one with a creative bent of mind.
The adoption ceremony will be held on February 23, which will be a private affair though the family members are planning a procession late in the evening. Consequent to his adoption, he will be renamed Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar. The family intends to perform a coronation ceremony, though it will be a symbolic act .
