District Collector K. Amrapali donated blood on the occasion of Thalassemia Day at the Red Cross building in Hanamkonda on Monday.

The Red Cross Society has been treating patients with Thalassemia -A blood disorder which results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anaemia - at the blood transfusion centre set up on its campus since 2014.

Free blood and medicines at discounted prices were also being provided to the patients undergoing treatment here.

Commemorating the World Red Cross Day and International Thalassemia Day, a blood donation camp was held at the Red Cross building here. The Collector, who was invited to take part in the programme, decided to give blood herself after she went round the blood transfusion centre and interacted with some of the patients there.

Coming to know that 2,847 patients had undergone treatment here, Ms. Amrapali appreciated the Red Cross Society and thanked the TNGOs and TGO employees for organising the blood donation camp.

Several other government and non-government employees came forward to donate blood during the camp.

Red Cross chairman T. Ravinder Rao, vice-chairman K. Sudhakar Reddy, Red Cross district managing committee members P. Vijay Chander Reddy, E.V. Srinivas Rao, TNGO district president Rajesh Kumar Goud and others were present.
