Voter awareness camp for transgender community

Scaling up its targeted interventions aimed at enhancing voter enrolment and turnout, the district administration on Sunday conducted an awareness programme for members of transgender community here under the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme.

The programme was conducted coinciding with the two-day special drive for enrolment of eligible voters in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections. Over 100 members of the transgender community from across the district participated and were apprised of the third gender option in the enrolment forms.

Addressing the gathering, Collector R.V. Karnan elucidated the slew of outreach programmes being implemented under the Election Commission of India’s SVEEP programme to make the electoral process more inclusive and accessible.

Addressing issues

Responding to the issues raised by some participants in their speeches earlier, he said the District Rural Development Agency would devise a comprehensive plan to form self-help groups for enabling the members of transgender community to pursue the path of financial self-reliance.

Domala Mary, a transgender, who unsuccessfully contested from Khammam Assembly constituency as an independent candidate in 2014 elections, sought sanction of double bedroom houses, Aadhaar and ration cards, financial assistance for self-employment ventures, quota in education and employment for members of the transgender community.
