Aggrieved villagers from the fluoride-affected and upland areas of the district staged a demonstration with empty drinking water containers made of clay here on Monday in an effort to draw the government’s attention towards their drinking water woes.

Scores of villagers mainly comprising women from different parts of the district organised the protest demonstration under the aegis of the Progressive Organisation for Women (POW) and Progressive Youth League (PYL) near the Collectorate here.

Addressing the protesters, the POW and PYL leaders deplored that the villagers of the fluoride affected areas in Tirumalayapalem, Nelakondapalli, Garla and several other mandals were facing severe hardships in fetching drinking water in the absence of potable water supply in the midst of summer.

They pointed out that tribal people of Raghaboinagudem, Marrigudem and other remote tribal habitations and the temporary settlements of migrant Adivasis in Yellendu mandal were compelled to trek long distances braving scorching sun to get a pot of water. They demanded that the government immediately make alternative arrangements to supply drinking water through tankers to the villages and municipal areas facing acute drinking water scarcity.

POW district president Kalpana and secretary Ch Shiromani among others spoke. A delegation of the POW and PYL leaders submitted a memorandum containing their charter of demands to the officials concerned later in the day.

The main demands include speedy completion of the long pending drinking water projects, repairs to the defunct borewells.
