The Home Ministry has cancelled the citizenship of a Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA after it was found that he had a German passport. India does not allow dual citizenship.

Ramesh Chennamaneni, TRS MLA for Vemulawada in Karimnagar district of Telangana, had allegedly obtained Indian citizenship by submitting “fake documents” and was elected thrice to the Assembly, including in a byelection. He has been given 30 days by the Home Ministry to file a reply.

The citizenship was cancelled following a probe by a court-appointed committee, a Home Ministry official said.

The probe was ordered after a political rival of Mr. Chennamaneni first approached the Andhra Pradesh High Court challenging the election of the TRS leader to the Assembly saying he was a German passport holder.
