With the final phase of Gram Panchayat elections slated to be held on Wednesday, the district police have made tight security arrangements in the election-bound 163 GPs in seven mandals of the district.

Vigil has been mounted in as many as 31 GPs located in the Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) affected areas to ensure peaceful conduct of the final phase of panchayat polls.

Over 1,000 police personnel have been deployed in the poll-bound seven mandals – Yellandu, Allapalli, Gundala, Tekulapalli, Julurupadu, Sujathnagar and Lakshmidevipalli.

Officers of the rank of ASP/DSP have been entrusted with the task of supervising the bandobust arrangements for Wednesday’s elections.

A poster bearing the name of CPI (Maoist) division committee containing a warning to the ruling TRS and main Opposition Congress party local leaders surfaced in the mandal headquarters town of Gundala on Tuesday.

Elsewhere in the district, the police have beefed up security arrangements to ward off trouble during Bharat Bandh called by CPI (Maoist) against Centre's ‘Operation Samadhan’ on Thursday.

Meanwhile, more than 1,200 police personnel have been pressed into service to ensure free and fair elections to a total of 168 GPs in seven mandals of Khammam district.

Reporter writes: Of the total 257 gram panchayats in 11 mandals in the district, barring 16 that were declared unanimous, the rest of the 241 local bodies will go to elections on Wednesday.

Officials said 766 candidates have registered for the contest, and a similar encounter is on for 5,074 candidates in 2,104 wards.

Joint Collector C. Narayana Reddy who oversaw election material distribution to polling staff in Chityal and Narketpally said arrangements were inspected to avoid previous mistakes.

Adilabad Special

The last phase polling will see most tribal voters exercising their franchise in former united Adilabad district.

Election is being held in third phase in all the tribal mandals. In Adilabad, 66,204 voters will vote for electing sarpanches and ward members in as many as 108 gram panchayats as 55 of the total of 163 gram panchayats saw unanimous election.

There are 386 contestants for sarpanch posts in these gram panchayats whle 740 are in the poll battle for the post of ward members.

In Nirmal district, election will be held for 122 gram panchayats as 9 of the total 133 panchayats where third phase polling is to be held had elected the incumbents with a unanimous vote.

In Kumram Bheem Asifabad, election will be held in 114 panchayats.

Mancherial district will have 82 gram panchayats going to polls besides 553 wards.

Election was unanimous in 10 gram panchayats.
