Two distressed farmers committed suicide in Adilabad district on Monday while the body of a third was found in a lake and he is assumed to have committed suicide too. According to police the third farmer Eerla Kanchetti, aged 60 years, belonging to Ratnapur Kandli in Lokeswaram mandal, had gone missing on the evening of October 17 reportedly after being perturbed over crop loss.

Toparam Gangadhar, aged 34 years committed suicide by hanging at his residence at Rachapur in Laxmanchanda mandal owing to failure of cotton and paddy crop. He had a debt of Rs. 2 lakh.

Huge debts

Similarly, Mantena Sayanna of Rampur in Dilawarpur mandal, aged 55 years, hung himself from a tree in his field. His cotton and soyabean crop failed and the four bore wells he had sunk also failed. He had incurred a debt of Rs. 4 lakh.

Suicide in Khammam

Khammam staff reporter adds: Perturbed over poor crop yield, a cotton farmer allegedly committed suicide at Kistaram village under Gangaram gram panchayat in Tekulapally mandal on Monday.

Sources said Ramesh, 30, allegedly swallowed pesticide at his cotton field in the afternoon. He died while being taken to the government area hospital in Kothagudem.

Ramesh was terribly upset over the abysmally low crop output despite his months of hard labour and heavy investment on cultivation of cotton crop in his eight acres of agricultural land. He took the drastic step unable to cope with the escalating debt burden, sources said. He is survived by his wife and four children.
