People’s opinion was visible in the recent Council election

Bharatiya Janata Party’s Telangana president K. Laxman has taken the party’s rout in December 2018 Assembly elections in his stride and is back on the road touring all the 17 parliamentary constituencies campaigning even as he coordinates visits of national leaders like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and others. Amid the heat and dust of hectic electioneering, he explains why people of the State are looking up to BJP afresh.

What makes you confident of the tide turning this time around for your party after suffering defeat in Assembly elections?

These are national elections to choose the Prime Minister of the country. I am witnessing a wave in favour of Prime Minister Narendra Modi wherever I go because of the five years performance of his government.

Steps taken in interim budget like Income Tax sops, reservations to Economically Weaker Sections, enhancing farmers income, among others. Decisive action against terror and air strikes at Balakot are bringing us tremendous support. Both public meetings of the Prime Minister were a big hit. We will surely improve our vote share and will do much better.

Why do you think TS people will prefer your party over Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS) or even the Congress Party?

There is a sea change at the ground level as is reflected in the recent elections to the Legislative Council polls when TRS-backed candidates lost very badly. During Assembly elections local issues were highlighted. KCR too covered up his failures and charges of corruption and family rule by raking up the Telangana sentiment and alleging that Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu will be back. As far as Congress party is concerned it is in no position to take on TRS with its elected representatives abandoning ship due to ‘underhand’ deals of its leaders with the ruling party.

The BJP accuses other parties of dynastic and family rule but tickets have been given in a similar fashion here too.

When the Congress Party is imploding and unable to take on the TRS, it is natural that some leaders wish to join the viable alternative and we are a force to reckon with. Mostly, we have given tickets to our party workers including for the three SC constituencies of Nagarkurnool (Bangaru Shruthi), Peddapalli (S.Kumar) and Warangal (Ch. Sambamurthy) though they are poor. In Nizamabad, D. Aravind (son of Congress leader and Member of Parliament D. Srinivas) has been working at the grassroot level for many years.

What are you promising the people of the State if they vote for BJP since no specific poll assurances are being made?

Mr. Modi is surely going to get a second term as PM so more MPs from here means we will be in position to get more funds, get faster approvals to projects to improve our infrastructure and employment prospects.

Neglected Central schemes like Ayushman Bharat, quota for EBCs and agriculture schemes here will be initiated while ensuring funds are not diverted elsewhere as it is happening now.
