Minister sees need for medical equipment manufacturing

Industries and Information Technology Minister K Taraka Rama Rao said that science and technology should come to the aid of the common man and address their problems.

Addressing a gathering after inaugurating the Diabetomics facility at Muppireddypally in Medak district on Saturday, Mr. Rama Rao said that around 7.2 crore people are affected with diabetes and the number might be higher, as many do not get tested.

“People fear visiting hospitals as doctors prescribe a number of tests . We are not used to health check-ups unlike in the developed countries like USA. Diseases like cancer can be prevented by getting advance tests,” he said and congratulated diabetomics team for bringing a new equipment by which people can test their diabetic levels for the past 15 days with saliva, for less than ₹ 67.

Being the second largest populated nation in the world, India has been importing 70 per cent of the medical equipment from Japan and Germany whereas we are producing only medical disposables, he said. Already 13 industries are functioning at the Medical Devices Park located at Sultanpur in Sangareddy district, the Minister said and urged industrialists to establish medical equipment industries.

Lok Sabha member K. Prabhakar Reddy, Diabetomics chairman Varaparasad Reddy, Rainbow chairman Ramesh Reddy and others participated in the programme.
