Many of us may have enjoyed seeing the quadrotor also known as quadcaptor, in motion, which was shown in the film ‘Three Idiots’. The quadcaptor was also used during the Uttaranchal floods, in which thousands of people were killed last year, for rescuing people and for reaching supplies to them.

How about building this wonder machine yourself? Some students at the RRS Engineering College located on the outskirts of this tiny village are being trained to do this. The programme was organised by the electronics and communications department of the college in association with Skyfi Labs.

An eight-member team from Skyfi Education Labs, based at Bengaluru, was here to impart training to students of various wings, including mechanical, aeronautical, ECE and EEE for two days on Wednesday and Thursday. The morning session of the training was more on theory such as different types of motors, motions of vehicle and controlling/tilting them according to requirement, twin captors, quadrotor, tricaptor flight. They were also being explained about different electronic components, aerodynamics, accelerometer, gyroscopes, controllers and electronic circuitry in quadrotor. The students were also explained the features of a development board with embedded systems which has several controls. The Skyfi Labs team has so far trained about 30,000 persons across the country in assembling quadrotors. While the entire kit costs about Rs. 22,500, it is being offered for Rs. 6,000 in the name of economic kit form where the students (team of five members) can use the components being supplied by the company for assembling and flying and later handing over the kit back to the company. “It takes about two hours for students to assemble and fly the quadrotor. Our effort is to create interest among students on the subject of aeronautics,” said Nithin. S, a representative of Skyfi.
