St. Gregorios Orthodox Cathedral, which is entering its golden jubilee year, is perhaps one of the first Orthodox churches established outside Kerala where St. Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ, is believed to have come in 52 A.D. and established Christianity.
The first-ever Episcopal visit to the parish in 1956 by late H.G. Mathews Mar Coorilos Metropolitan (later H.H. Moran Mar Baselius Mar Thoma Mathews II Catholicos and Malankara Metropolitan) marked the commencement of the groundwork for the establishment of a church.
On November 2, 1969, the Commemoration Day of its patron-saint Parumala Kochu Thirumeni, the newly-built church was consecrated by the then Metropolitan for Diocese Outside Kerala, Mathews Mar Athanasius.
The fifty glorious golden years of the church have been spiritually fruitful and eventful for the believers/ parishioners. The cathedral at Gandhinagar, named after the first Indian saint of any Christian denomination St. Gregorios of Parumala has been a beacon of light all these years for the people of the twin cities irrespective of creed or religion.
Hundreds have been praying at the Holy Relics of the saint established in the cathedral. Thus, from a humble beginning by a group of strong believers of orthodoxy of a temple of worship in the pre-Independence years, the cathedral has been a place of spiritual refuge for several generations.
The valedictory function of the golden jubilee would be held on November 10 at the cathedral where Minister for Labour and Employment M. Malla Reddy would be the chief guest and Supreme Head of the Orthodox Church in India, Mar Baselius Mar Thoma Paulose II Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan, would preside.
