The new examination and evaluation system introduced in Telangana had its impact on the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations with the pass percentage dropping by almost eight percent.
The results declared on Sunday by the Education Minister, Kadiyam Srihari revealed that only 77.56 per cent students cleared the exams while it was 85 per cent for the 10 Telangana districts in the united Andhra Pradesh last year. The Minister said the reduction in passes could be attributed to the new examination system where students had to answer in their own words rather than repeating what they mugged from the books. The reduction in number of malpractice cases this year also reflected how there was no chance for mass copying unlike the previous years.
The Minister said that Warangal district was at the top with 91.6 per cent passes and Adilabad recorded the lowest with 54.9 per cent passes. At the same time 1,491 schools secured 100 per cent passes while in 28 schools not a single student could pass. Pass percentage across the social groups was almost similar with Backward Classes (79.83 per cent) being the highest followed by Other Castes (77.12), Scheduled Tribes (73.57) and Scheduled Castes (73.23).
He said the Telangana State Residential Educational Institutions Society (TSREI) secured the highest passes registering 92.99 per cent while Government Schools were at the bottom with 63.39 per cent. Out of the 65 TSREI schools 22 secured 100 per cent passes while out of the 120 TS Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions (TSSWREIS) 27 got 100 per cent results. Among the Tribal Welfare schools only 9 secured 100 per cent passes out of the 72.
Among the 1015 Government schools 9 secured zero passes and 99 secured 100 per cent passes. Among the 4052 Zilla Parishad schools five were under zero passes category and 385 under 100 per cent passes category. Among the successful candidates 1,50,911 secured A1 grade (marks between 91 and 100).
Minister warns
The Minister warned the private schools claiming ranks in SSC and said action would be initiated against them as ranks were banned by the Government and only grades were given.
Supplementary exams
The supplementary exams will be held from June 18 to July 2 and students who have failed have to pay the exam fee before May 30. Students who wish to get their marks recounted have to pay Rs. 500 per subject while those who wish for re-verification of their answer scripts have to pay Rs. 1,000 per subject.
