City-based Srinivasa Farms is planning to adopt 30 government schools in Telangana for one year and provide eggs for students under mid-day meal scheme. It is part of the International Egg Commission (IEC) campaign worldwide, especially in the developing countries, to promote egg consumption to tackle malnutrition among children, said Srinivasa Farms vice-chairman and managing director Suresh Chitturi on Friday.
Mr. Chitturi, also the vice-chairman of IEC, told the newsmen on the occasion of World Egg Day that eggs from poultry farms were not fertilised and vegetarians too can consume it as it was “no different from milk”.
“Several campaigns will be taken up across the country to promote egg consumption at one lakh schools in Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. Apart from road shows, prominent chefs would be invited to create egg-based dishes through television and live shows highlighting the goodness of eggs,” he explained.
The country stands second in egg production and fourth in broiler chicken in the world with annual production being 91 billion and 4.8 million tonnes respectively.
The highest egg per capita consumption is in south with TS at 130, A.P. at 120 and TN at 110 being the top three.
However, Mr. Chitturi said the overall egg consumption in the country was low at 69 eggs per capita when compared to 180 as per the Indian Medical Council recommendations.
