Each of these markets would be built at an estimated cost of around Rs.50 lakh and designed to maximise the convenience of shoppers.

For all the daily shopping needs, from groceries to vegetables, don’t look far, for the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is coming up with modern markets right in the neighbourhood.

The civic body has drawn up plans to set up 150 modern neighbourhood markets across the city and sanction has been accorded for 50 of them to be taken up in the first phase. Tenders were called for model markets and the GHMC would be spending around Rs.25 crore for the first lot of 50 markets.

The city presently has around 30 markets located in different places but most of them have been languishing in apathy and maintained in poor conditions.

The GHMC has decided to pull down these and set up swank new two-storeyed complexes offering daily needs at one place.

Apart from these 30 existing markets, 20 more locations have already been identified to cater different areas.

The municipal corporation has selected locations with available area ranging between 200 square yards to 500 square yards, mainly on the government sites for the concept of neighbourhood markets.

According to an official, most of these locations abut the main roads and were nearer to residential colonies.

“Each of these markets would be built at an estimated cost of around Rs.50 lakh and designed to maximise the convenience of shoppers,” said an official.

Of the two levels, the ground floor would be earmarked for vegetable stalls, pharmacies and ATMs while the first floor would go in for grocery stores, fruit shops and non-vegetarian market.

Small sized eateries have been incorporated on the ground floor, he added.
