Seven students in the age group of nine to 12 years drowned in two separate incidents in Nagarkurnool and Sangareddy districts on Wednesday.

In the first incident that took place in Rudraram village of Patancheru mandal in Sangareddy district, four minors came to their grandmother’s house in the village for summer vacation from Hyderabad, went to a nearby quarry pit for swimming and drowned.

The victims were identified as Govardhan, Vishnuvardhan, Anand and Nandini from Balajinagar in Alwal here. “They were playing in knee-deep water and were swept away,” Patancheru DSP Rajeshwar Rao said. The bodies were fished out with the help of professional swimmers and sent for autopsy.

In another incident, three students, including two girls from Nandiwaddeman village in Bijinepally mandal of Nagarkurnool district, drowned in an irrigation tank.

Police said the incident took place around 5 p.m. when they went for fishing at Suryakunta tank in the village. The victims were identified as Anil (9), his sister Swati (8) and their friend Shailaja (12). The survivor Ganesh was rescued by a villager Venkataiah, who saw him struggling in the water.

“After completing the fishing activity in a pit, they went near the tank to wash their legs and accidentally fell into the tank,” it was said.
