The Hyderabad Sailing Week was inaugurated at Hussainsagar here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Lt. Gen. Paramjit Singh, VSM, Commodore, EME Sailing Association, said the response for this season was tremendous with 170 entries from different clubs of which 15 were in women’s category. “The best part is that 28 participants from Telangana will be vying for honours too,” he said. Some of the trophies that are up for grabs include Late Lt. Cdr. Kelly S. Rao Trophy, Rolling Trophy of Secunderabad Club, YAI Katari Bowl and other individual medals too.

Telangana IT and Municipal Administration Minister K.T. Rama Rao said the State government was committed to promoting sports in a big way and offering incentives to outstanding athletes from different disciplines.

“Sailing too features in our priority list and the vast expanse of the Hussainsagar in the heart of twin cities is perhaps the most ideal venue to host this mega event,” he said. “I appreciate the efforts of Laser Class Association of India and the Sports Authority of Telangana State for hosting the event,” Mr. Rao said. Major General T.S.A. Narayanan, Vice-Commodore, EMESA, said with the national championship commencing here being now accredited as the YAI National-ranking event, the performances of sailors would be ranked which would help them in competing in international events, including Olympics, as they can pick important points that should help them in selection for Indian teams.
