Ryots block highway against KUDA proposal

Scores of farmers of Mamnoor village blocked the traffic on Warangal-Khammam highway for some time in protest against the declaration of their village in the ‘public and semi-public zone’ of the proposed Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA)’s master plan-2041.

Holding placards and squatting on the highway they staged a rasta-roko and held up traffic for several hours demanding that Mamnoor village be declared residential zone instead of public and semi-public zone in the master plan. The villagers contended that as many as 382 farmers holding around 602 acres of land in Mamnoor would be badly affected with the KUDA’s proposal. The villagers also opposed the proposed 150 feet road instead of the existing 40 feet road next to Pathfinder High School that connected lands in their village.

Mamnoor, a suburban village was merged with Greater Warangal city in 2015 with the formation of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation. The farmers alleged that right from 1937, they were getting a raw deal from the successive governments as in all 2600 acres of land in Mamnoor got reduced to 602 acres as the governments took away 1200 acres of land for the proposed airport and another 650 acres for the dairy farm from the farmers.

“It is mostly the small and marginal farmers of Mamnoor who wouldbe affected due to the announcement of their village lands under the public and semi-public zone. Some are still cultivating their land and cannot afford to lose it for KUDA’s proposed public and semi-public zone,” argued a farmer M. Devender Reddy.

He said the officials must change the zone status to a residential zone. Several farmers who suffered for generations held on to their lands for the benefit of the future generations. KUDA’s announcement has shattered their dreams.

Leaders of all political parties participated in the protest despite the rain.
