Following the reported leakages of the Mid Manair Dam (Sri Raja Rajeshwara) reservoir in Boinpalli mandal, the irrigation authorities have taken up the repair works by removing a section of the earth dam on Friday.

By deploying heavy machinery, the authorities were removing the earth a 200 m section — from the 2475 metres point to 2675 metres point — of the earth dam and in area where the leak was suspected to be present. The authorities were shocked to see the soil very loose in the area.

Following heavy inflows into the Sripada Yellampalli project (SYP), the irrigation authorities had lifted the water from the SYP through Kaleshwaram lift scheme from Nandi Medaram through Laxmipur pump house into the MMD. After filling about 15 tmc ft of water against the storage capacity of 25.975 tmc ft, the MMD developed leakages.

Sensing possible breach, the irrigation authorities had opened all the 25 flood gates of the project and released water downstream into the Lower Manair Dam in August last week. Presently, the irrigation authorities were storing only 4 tmc ft of water in the project. Later, they tested the reservoir bunds for leaks.

The officials had collected the soil samples by using piezometer and sent it for electricity resistivity tomography (ERT) and soil resistivity testing (SRT) in New Delhi. Following the ERT and SRT reports, the irrigation authorities have launched the repairs to the earth dam.

TPCC working president Ponnam Prabhakar, in a statement, demanded that the government should order a judicial inquiry into the poor quality works of the MMD reservoir and punish the culprits. He asked why the government and TRS leaders were remaining silent and not disclosing any details about the MMD reservoir and why it was not being filled in spite of the availability of abundant water.
