June 08, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:43 am IST - KHAMMAM:

A protest by the representatives of some town-based private colleges and a few student unions in front of a private school cum junior college on Wyra road turned tense here on Sunday. They were protesting the alleged clandestine activities of a Vijayawada-based corporate college with regard to unauthorised enrolment of students.

According to sources, a heated argument ensued between the protesters and the staff of the private college as the latter rebutted the charges. Tension broke out when a lorry carrying some books arrived at the spot from Vijaywada. The protesters, including several SFI activists, staged a sit-in demanding seizure of the material. In the melee, the members of both the groups allegedly exchanged blows. The police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control. Meanwhile, both sides lodged complaints against each other at the two town police station later in the day.
