Price reduction target for other drugs too

The Nizamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry founder-president P.R. Somani, who had claimed that the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) restricted trade margin on MRP of 42 non-scheduled anti-cancer medicines up to 30% because of his efforts, has said that he will ensure prices of other drugs are also substantially reduced.

Mr Somani had earlier said that some life-saving drugs and generic medicines are sold at MRP, which is a whopping 500% to 2,000% more than the wholesale price, and that he had brought the issue to the notice of the Prime Minister’s Office, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and other leaders, after which government took quick action.

“I will follow it up to ensure prices of all life-saving drugs, generic drugs and medical devices are reduced. The MRPs should and will be somewhat close to the range of prices at Jan Aushadhi stores. People will save up to 85% of money spent on medicines,” Mr Somani said.
