The general body of the Zilla Parishad expressed serious concern at the state of affairs of the primary health centres and government schools and urged Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy to take action against the erring authorities and absent doctors.
Cutting across party lines they registered protest against the negligence of doctors in attending to patients, absence of doctors and paramedics and their reckless attitude towards the elected representatives. They wanted the government to make them accountable to the people. Replying to their complaint, the Minister, who attended as the chief guest, directed the District Medical and Health Officer Dr. Basweswari to take into notice the advice of the elected representatives and issue notification to fill vacant doctor posts at PHCs on contract basis. “I will pursue the matter with Health Minister K. Lakshma Reddy who is coming to the district today and request him to give orders to fill the paramedics posts,” he said.
Congress floor leader in the Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir, Member of Parliament B.B. Patil, MLC V.G. Goud, MLA Mohammed Shakeel (Bodhan), Joint Collector A. Ravinder Reddy, CEO Mohan Lal, ZPTCC members and MPP presidents were among those who attended. The ZP Chairman Dafedar Raju presided over the meeting.
Farmers’ suicides
Initiating the debate on the issues of farm sector and farmers, Mr. Shabbir Ali said that though 54 farmers committed suicide in the district, the authorities neither called on the bereaved families nor recommended for sanction of ex gratia to them. He said the ex gratia to the victim families was already released in Medak and Karimanagar. Appealing to the Minister to use his offices to increase the ex gratia amount from Rs. 1.50 lakh to Rs. 5 lakh keeping in view the increasing prices, he observed that the government should respond immediately to waive crop loan amount at one go, enabling the farmers to get back their gold and land documents pledged in banks.
