The Chennai City Police, as part of pre-emptive action, detained cadres of Thamizhar Munnetra Padai (TMP) who had planned to protest seeking the removal of the statue of late Telugu actor Sobhan Babu from Aminjikarai on Monday.

However, police detained TMP party founder Veeralakshmi and some others at Nazarathpet, near Avadi, preventively.

They were not allowed to proceed towards Nelson Manickam Road, where the statue is located, a senior police official said.

Meanwhile, members of the Tamil Nadu Telugu Yuva Sakthi (TNTYS), citing the parochial views of the TMP and pointing out that film artistes were above regional considerations, visited the house of Sobhan Babu’s son to extend solidarity.

In a press statement, the members of TNTYS, highlighting the peaceful co-existence between Telugu and Tamil people for decades, condemned those persons or parties engaged in trying create divisions and insecurity.

Kethireddy Jagadishwara Reddy of TNTYS and Telugu Samaikya Vedika president Tanguturi Ramakrishna were part of the delegation to the late Sobhan Babu’s house.
